How to tell if a diamond is real

Fog tests, UV lights, loupe checks - the internet has a lot of opinions about spotting a fake diamond. Here's what actually works, what doesn't, and the one thing that settles the question for good.

What actually makes a diamond "real"

A genuine diamond - mined or lab-grown - is crystallized carbon, rated a 10 on the Mohs hardness scale. The only real difference between the two is where the carbon crystallized: underground over millions of years, or in a lab over a few weeks using heat and pressure (HPHT) or vapor deposition (CVD). Chemically, optically, and physically, they're the same material - no home test can or should tell them apart, because there's nothing to tell apart.

What these tests are actually built to catch are simulants - stones that look like diamonds but aren't. The usual suspects are cubic zirconia, moissanite, and white sapphire, and each behaves a little differently under testing, which is why one single trick rarely tells the whole story.

These are useful first impressions, not proof. Treat a failed home test as a reason to get a professional opinion - not a verdict on its own.

Breath fog

Fog the stone with your breath, the way you'd fog a mirror. A real diamond disperses heat so efficiently the fog clears almost instantly. Simulants hold the fog for a few extra seconds.

Reading through it

Set a loose stone face-down over small printed text. If the letters stay legible, it's very likely not a diamond - a diamond's refraction scatters light too much for text to read through clearly.

Sparkle pattern

Tilt the stone under a single light source. A diamond throws mostly crisp white flashes with only occasional color. Heavy, colorful "disco ball" sparkle usually points to cubic zirconia instead.

UV light

Under a UV blacklight in a dark room, roughly half of natural diamonds glow a soft blue. No glow doesn't mean it's fake - plenty of genuine diamonds show none - so treat this as a supporting clue only.

10x loupe check

Look inside the stone with a jeweler's loupe. Most real diamonds carry tiny natural inclusions - small internal marks that are effectively a fingerprint. A stone that's perfectly, suspiciously clean under magnification is worth a second look.

A basic thermal probe is the tool most jewelers reach for first - diamonds conduct heat so efficiently that a positive reading is fast and clear. Its one blind spot is moissanite, which conducts heat almost identically to diamond and can trigger a false positive. Getting past that requires a dual thermal-and-electrical tester, since moissanite and diamond behave very differently under an electrical current - that combination is what actually tells the two apart with confidence.

Beyond that, a trained gemologist can combine loupe work, UV response, and conductivity readings into a full picture - but the only method that removes all doubt is independent certification. An IGI or GIA report documents the stone's cut, color, clarity, and carat weight, confirms whether it's natural or lab-grown, and laser-inscribes a certificate number on the girdle that you can look up yourself. Tests worth skipping entirely

Scratching glass

Yes, diamonds scratch glass - but so does moissanite, so it doesn't actually prove much. It also risks chipping a thin girdle or knocking a stone loose from its setting. Not worth the risk on a mounted piece.

Direct heat / flame

Diamonds handle heat well in general, but sudden thermal shock can react badly with internal inclusions in both natural and lab-grown stones. There's no test result here worth the risk of damage.

Comparing weight to size

Cubic zirconia is denser than diamond, so a same-sized CZ actually weighs more - the opposite of what people assume. Without a calibrated scale and exact measurements, this "test" mostly just causes confusion.
