The Art of the
Diamond Cut

Cut is the most important of the 4 Cs. It determines how brilliantly a diamond interacts with light—and ultimately, how breathtaking it looks.

More Than Shape — It's How a Diamond Lives in Light

A diamond's cut refers not to its shape, but to how well it has been fashioned from the rough stone. A perfectly cut diamond allows light to enter, bounce between its facets, and exit in a brilliant display of fire and scintillation. Even a flawless diamond can look dull if cut poorly — and a well-cut diamond of modest clarity can be absolutely radiant.

How Cut Affects Light

Three optical properties define a diamond's dazzle

Brilliance

The white light reflected from the interior and surface of a diamond. A perfectly cut diamond returns maximum light back to the viewer's eye.

Fire

The dispersion of white light into spectral colors. A well-cut diamond scatters rainbow flashes of color, especially in candlelight settings.

Scintillation

The sparkle and play of light as the diamond, viewer, or light source moves. This is the "wow" factor — flashes of contrast and sparkle.

Cut Within the 4 Cs Framework

Cut is the most critical C — it directly influences how the other three Cs appear to the eye

C

Cut

The most important of the 4 Cs. A poor cut will make even the highest-grade diamond appear dull. We recommend Excellent or Ideal grade for maximum beauty.

C

Color

Graded D (colorless) to Z (light yellow). The cut affects how color is perceived — a well-cut diamond can make a G-H stone appear near colorless to the naked eye.

C

Clarity

Refers to internal inclusions and external blemishes. A superb cut can minimize the visibility of inclusions through light performance and brilliance.

C

Carat

Weight of the diamond. Cut proportions affect how large a diamond appears — a well-cut 1ct can look larger than a poorly cut 1.2ct stone.
